I have been collecting for the Sega Dreamcast for a few years now, and I thought it would be fun to write a quick tutorial outlining the process of purchasing your first Dreamcast, accessories, and of course games. This article will be broken up into three sections with the first section discussing the purchase of the Dreamcast, the second section covering your first games, and the final section covering recommendations.
Part 1: Buying The Dreamcast
When you are looking to buy your Dreamcast it is recommended that you aim to get your Dreamcast System, system cables, controller, and VMU (Visual Memory Unit) all at the same time. By doing this you will ensure that you will have everything you need to start playing almost any game your purchase. Below I have provided a link to one of my favorite places to buy games online, but if you can I highly recommend that you purchase your first Dreamcast from a local Retro Game Store.
Most local game stores will allow you to try systems, games, accessories before you by them, and the staff will be able to make recommendations about which you might enjoy most.
Part 2: Your First Games
After you have picked out your system it is time to begin purchasing some games for your system. Typically when I first get a system I try to avoid getting too many high dollar games, and I instead try to focus on getting a variety of games. By doing this you will ensure that you have a large enough selection to keep you entertained for a couple weeks.
Just like before I am going to recommend that your purchase your games from a local game store if possible, but if that isn’t possible for you to do then you should take a look at some of the recommendations I have made down below.
- Phantasy Star Online (Version 1 or 2)
- Sonic Adventure
- Dead or Alive 2
- Quake 3
- The Next Tetris: Online Edition
- Crazy Taxi
- Sega GT
- Space Channel 5
- Evolution: The World Of The Sacred Device
Part 3: Your Next Purchases
At this point in the article you have most likely picked up your Dreamcast System, a few games, and you are probably beginning to wonder what you should purchase next. Well honestly the sky is the limit for Dreamcast collecting due to the fact that the Dreamcast has a diverse library of games, and many of the best games can still be purchased for a reasonable price.
To give you an idea of what I mean I have selected two videos that do a great job of covering the Dreamcast, accessories, and games.
